bios update
Lenovo distributes the BIOS in two forms: a windows installer, and an iso you're meant to burn to a CD. It's kinda funny cause the laptop doesn't even have a cd drive.
You can convert the iso image to a bootable flashdrive img with a tool (perl
script) called geteltorito:
geteltorito -o bios.img gruj37us.is
Then just copy that into your flashdrive:
sudo cp bios.img /dev/sdb
Finally, reboot, but make sure your bios is set to load UEFI/Legacy. If it's legacy only it will not work.
trackpad
This fucking trackpad has caused nothing but issues. It's an old synaptics touchpad and for months I had this issue with it skipping, freezing, and sometimes all out dying and only fixing with a reboot (if I was lucky... sometimes days went by without it working). I caved and ordered one of the generation 3 trackpads which have the proper 3 physical buttons and seem all-around more reliable.
Maybe I'll get that https://frame.work/ laptop.
charging port
This version of the thinkpad uses a square charging port. It's quite nice and all, but it would be pretty rad if it was USB-C instead so I only ever need one charger for all my computers.
I found someone who is selling USB-C charging ports that you can put inside old
thinkpads:
