The trail begins about 2 hours north west of wanaka. The drive in is treacherous and involves driving through 9 stream crossings. The first time Jazzi and I drove there we banged up our rear bumper pretty good! Fortunately, the first stream crossing is perhaps the most sketchy so you can judge from the first one if it's safe to go. I think the trick is to go fast enough to get through them, but not so fast you smash your bumper. Perhaps 20-35km/h.
Once you've arrived there's an incredible hiking / biking trail through the valley or the main walk up to the glacier. It's not too long of a walk, but it is certainly steep and should only be attempted in good weather. (There was on/off rain when we went in late May which seems to be the norm). The water in the nearby streams is the most blue I've ever seen. It looks unreal. The glacier itself is breathtaking and the walk up shows little peaks of it as your approach.
