The first time I visited boulder co was on a work trip. I was flown into auckland for a single night and we were driven out to some crappy gastro-pub for the work event. After it finished I walked down the road to boulder co. It's in a bit of an industrial park, but luckily there were still sidewalks so it was manageable.
When I walked in the guy working asked if I'd climbed before, I said for the better part of the last decade. I didn't get any safety spiel. I climbed quite well, topping several 6s, the setting was good, but not unfortunately the gym was lacking in density and character.
As I was leaving I bought some hats for jazzi and I and asked for cash back so I could take the bus back to the airport. The airport is 35km away and it would be almost 2 hours of bus riding, but I had nothing going on. The person at the register looked worried and explained that the buses stopped taking cash and don't take credit cards either. My heart sank, but then he said "hang on I might have my bus card" and then attempted to give me his bus card. He remarked that it might not have any money on it and then his co-worker was like "wait take mine instead it's got a few bucks on it". I wound up leaving the gym with a loaded up bus card. Absolutely crazy! The bus rides were wonderful and when I got into the CBD I walked around a bit before taking the final train + bus to the airport.
When I arrived back in dunedin I saw a friend ralf who was at the airport leaving. We chatted and he mentioned that he's heading to auckland so I handed him the card and told him the funny story. Wonder who has it now.
