I don't remember where I saw it, but there was a study I read years ago about young kids performing far lower at math and writing when they knew the teach would read their work. The conclusion of the study was similar to a point in this article about how "procrastination is more likely when the task is meaningful and the individual cares about doing it well." A lot of the reason I did projects at the last minute was to give myself an excuse if I didn't do as well as I expected. If you've felt like that before you should seriously give this article a read, it took a lot of time to come to these ideas alone and this just spells them all out elegantly.
